23 Aug. 2023

The 18th Meeting of the KR European Committee (KREC)*took place on July 10th, with KR hosting the event in London, UK.

Each year, KR organizes the KREC meeting to engage with its members and delve into the significant challenges that the global maritime industry faces. Additionally, the aim is to showcase KR's impressive technical achievements and initiatives to stakeholders in the European maritime community, all with the goal of advancing the entire global maritime sector.

During the 18th meeting, KR highlighted its strides in technology and R&D efforts focused on decarbonization—an issue of utmost importance for the international maritime industry. Attendees engaged in comprehensive discussions on how to effectively address the recently revised ship GHG reduction targets established at IMO MEPC 80. Deliberations also centered around decisions made by other influential international maritime bodies, including IACS.

Furthermore, the KREC members exchanged valuable insights regarding various industry challenges. These included
discussions on OCIMF's SIRE 2.0 shipowners' individual responses to alternative decarbonization fuels the outcomes of economic assessment analyses related to these alternatives. Collaborative efforts sought effective strategies to navigate these issues successfully.

Held at a critical juncture, given the anticipated substantial impact on the shipping industry following the stringent regulations from MEPC 80, the meeting proved highly beneficial. It provided a platform for leaders within the shipping sector to share their experiences and viewpoints, yielding essential insights that will shape KR's future technological strategies in the context of decarbonization.

KR is committed to extending the knowledge and insights gained from this meeting to pivotal stakeholders in the maritime industry, including IMO and IACS. This collaborative approach aims to pave the way for a more promising and effective trajectory forward.
