Bespoke Technical Seminar
16 May. 2022

Guidelines for ammonia-fueled ships are being amended by the KR Machinery Rule Development Team. In this regard, KR visited three major shipbuilding companies (Samsung Heavy Industries [SHI], Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering [KSOE], and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering [DSME]) to conduct a seminar and discuss the status of ammonia fuel technology .

KR presented the regulatory trends relating to ammonia-fueled ships developed by the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC) and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), as well as discussing the safety concept of ammonia, which included information from The Society for Gas as Marine Fuel (SGMF) meetings, technical data, and on-site visits to ammonia facilities.

In addition, based on current research, we proposed a reasonable reduction of flammability-related requirements for ammonia fuel and amendments that complement additional toxicity-related requirements. During the Q&A session, we shared opinions on ammonia fuel technology.

The three shipbuilding companies expressed their appreciation for the seminar and the efforts of the shipyard to reflect on the development of the regulations and they hoped to continue to communicate in the future.

KR will continue to use the information collected through active communication with the industry to develop advanced regulations. We will also lead the industry to reflect the opinions of the shipowners and operators in the development of IMO regulations for ammonia-fueled ships.
