Korean Register (KR) and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV M&O) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering floating offshore wind development in Korea’s East Sea on 17 March.
The East Sea Floating Offshore Wind Power Complex is a project that aims to build a floating offshore wind farm with a capacity of more than 1GW in the sea off Ulsan.
Six consortiums including Equinor of Norway; Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) of Denmark; Green Investment Group (GIG); and CoensHexicon, a joint venture between Sweden's Hexicon AB and an integrated service provider in South Korea are participating in the project.
The MoU will see both parties reinforce their collaborative efforts for floating offshore wind farm projects, while promoting sustainable business opportunities, including offshore wind and renewable energy.
“BV has the relevant technical background and know-how gained through the implementation of numerous projects in the floating offshore wind farm industry while KR has a diverse track record and solid networks in the Korean offshore industry,” said LEE Hyungchul, KR Chairman and CEO and added, “Our excellent technical support will ensure that domestic floating offshore wind power complexes are stable and the technology can be continuously improved.”
KR has developed a number of offshore wind-power technologies through its research and development (R&D) with several offshore wind power experts. Based on the accumulated technology, KR provides certifications throughout the wind-power sector, including Type Certification, Component Certification, Prototype Certification and Project Certification.
