[China Regional Office] Dalian Shipowner Technical Seminar
The China Regional Office hosted the Dalian Shipowner Technical Seminar at the Grand Hyatt Dalian on 11 June, bringing together leading shipowners from the region.
The seminar was organized to deepen technical exchange with major shipowners in the Dalian area and to strengthen the foundation for ongoing collaboration. Presentations focused on decarbonization and digital transformation — the defining issues currently shaping the shipping industry — with sessions covering the latest developments in technology and regulation.
Four topics were presented: an introduction to KR PILOT and KR POWER; the use of KR GEARS for carbon regulatory compliance; recent developments in international conventions and regulations; and key port state control (PSC) issues and response strategies. Each session drew strong engagement from attendees.
Approximately 150 shipowners and maritime industry representatives attended the event. The seminar and accompanying networking sessions provided an opportunity to reinforce cooperation and lay the groundwork for expanded business engagement going forward.
[Management System Certification Center] Information Session on the ISO 9001 / 14001 Revision and Risk Assessment
The Korean Register (KR) Management System Certification Centre held the Information Session on ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 Standard Revisions and Risk Assessment for Accident Prevention on 17 June at the KR International Education and Training Centre. The session was attended by approximately 50 representatives from KR ISO-certified companies based in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province, as well as companies located within the Myeongji and Noksan National Industrial Complexes.
The session was organized to introduce the key changes in the anticipated revision to ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems), expected to be published this year, and in ISO 14001:2026 (Environmental Management Systems), revised and published in April, and to share practical guidance on how organisations can respond effectively. The session also covered the concept of risk assessment and its practical application, with a view to supporting accident prevention and addressing the growing industry focus on serious workplace incidents and safety management.
Presentations centered on the core changes in the revised standards and on response strategies directly applicable in the workplace, drawing strong interest and engagement from attendees. A question-and-answer session followed, during which a range of views on implementing the revised standards and operationalizing risk assessment were discussed actively.
The KR Management System Certification Centre plans to hold a second session in mid-July in Jungang-dong, Busan, for key shipping company clients, followed by a series of regional sessions for KR ISO-certified companies and major national industrial complex tenants across the country.
KR will continue to deliver ISO certification and audit services that add value for clients, while expanding technical support and training services and sharing the latest developments in standards and regulation through ongoing information exchange and engagement with client organisations. KR also plans to broaden its tailored training and technical support offerings to reflect the practical needs of industry, actively supporting clients in strengthening their management system capabilities and achieving sustainable business performance.
[Survey Team] Seminar on the Management and Operation of Dangerous Goods Carriers for Marine Accident Prevention
The Survey Team held a technical seminar on 23 June at Lavalse Hotel, Busan, to support small and medium-sized shipping companies operating dangerous goods carriers in strengthening their safety management capabilities and preventing marine accidents.
The seminar was attended by approximately 40 representatives fromshipping companies and ship management firms and was designed as a forum for sharing practical information on marine accident prevention and the enhancement of safety management systems.
Three topics were presented: a review of marine accidents and approaches to improving safety management systems; accident prevention measures for dangerous goods carriers; and safe procedures for cargo tank cleaning and gas-freeing operations on dangerous goods carriers. Each session focused on knowledge directly applicable in operational settings.
Attendees shared recent accident case studies, prevention measures, and examples of safety management best practice, using the occasion to strengthen their capacity to ensure the safe operation of dangerous goods carriers and respond effectively to incidents.
The seminar contributed to raising the standard of in-house safety management among smaller operators and to promoting a broader culture of safety across the sector.
[Technical Division] Roundtable with Leading Domestic Naval Architecture and Ship Design Firms
On June 24, the Technical Division hosted a roundtable to strengthen cooperation with leading domestic ship design firms.
The event was attended by representatives of major Korean ship design companies and officials from KR's Technical Division. The occasion carried particular significance as it marked the resumption of a forum that had been discontinued for approximately a decade.
Participants exchanged views freely on key issues in design and technical practice and discussed avenues for cooperation in support of the shipbuilding and maritime industry. Design firm representatives expressed their expectations for KR's growing standing and role in the global market and called for continued support and collaboration to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic industry.
