On April 15, the Korean Register (KR) successfully launched a consultative body at the Smart Hall on the 18th floor of its headquarters to lead the development of international standards for onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS)*. *Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS): A system that captures carbon dioxide from ship exhaust gas, stores it in liquefied form, and later disposes of or recycles it onshore.
The consultative body consists of 10 organizations from government, industry, and research sectors working together under a cooperative framework. Its objective is to actively respond to discussions at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) based on Korea’s technological capabilities and to take a leading role in establishing future international standards. The consultative body plans to continue promoting technical discussions and joint cooperation initiatives moving forward.
The launch ceremony was attended by key officials and working-level representatives, including KR Vice President Kim Dae-heon of the R&D Division, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, KRISO, HMM, Samsung Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems, Hi Air Korea, and PANASIA.
During the event, participating organizations signed an MOU to strengthen mutual cooperation. Under the agreement, the organizations plan to establish a close cooperative framework in areas such as technology demonstration, data sharing, and safety assurance.
In particular, KR’s Convention & Legislation Service Team will serve as the working-level lead department for the consultative body, acting as the overall coordinator for the development of agenda documents regarding IMO response activities and coordination among participating organizations.
