[Convention & Legislation Service Team] KR Holds Technical Seminar on IGC Code Amendments for Major Korean Shipbuilders
From December 9, 2025 to February 23, 2026, the Korean Register (KR) Convention & Legislation Service Team completed a preliminary impact analysis of the amendments to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), which are expected to be approved and adopted at MSC 111 and MSC 112 and to enter into force on July 1, 2028. To support customers in preparing proactively for the upcoming regulatory changes, KR held a series of remote technical seminars via MS Teams for four major Korean shipbuilders.
[Alternative Fuel Technology Research Team] KR Successfully Holds Performance Demonstration of Microwave Catalyst Heating System for Ammonia Engines
On February 11, the Green Ship Equipment Test & Certification Center (TCC) of the Alternative Fuel Technology Research Team under the Korean Register (KR) R&D Division successfully held a performance demonstration of a microwave catalyst heating system developed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. The event was attended by key industry, academia, and research representatives, including KIM Daeheon, Head of the KR Research & Development Division, SONG Kanghyun, Director of the Research Institute, as well as officials from the Decarbonization Ship Research Center of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HMM.
Last year, the project successfully completed a land-based demonstration of a wing sail system, and sea trials through shipboard application are currently underway. The newly developed system is also scheduled for future sea-based demonstrations.
[AI Convergence Center] KR Holds Technical Seminar on “KR-Real360” Solution for Shipowners
|
On February 24, the AI Convergence Center of the Korean Register (KR) Research Division visited the CMA CGM shipowner’s office at the invitation of HD Hyundai Samho and conducted a seminar on “KR-Real360,” an XR-based vessel familiarization solution.
The seminar was organized to respond to the growing demand among global shipping companies for digital transformation and enhanced crew competency, with the aim of sharing the development background and key features of KR-Real360 while discussing its potential practical applications.
During the seminar, presentations focused on the background of the solution’s development and its main functionalities, followed by a live demonstration. The event showcased how content is structured and delivered within a 3D ship-based environment, linking key equipment and onboard spaces with immersive content and usage scenarios.
The session also highlighted the expected benefits of adopting the solution, including improved crew familiarization and enhanced training efficiency. Participants subsequently exchanged views on practical shipboard implementation methods, phased adoption possibilities, and future collaboration directions.
KR plans to continue advancing XR-based solutions in response to the maritime industry’s digital transformation needs and to expand service models that can provide practical support for vessel operations through collaboration with shipowners and shipbuilders.
[Mokpo Branch Office] KR Holds Customer Meeting with Small Shipyards and Design Companies

On February 12, the Mokpo Branch Office of the Korean Register (KR) held a customer meeting for small shipyards and ship design companies. The meeting was organized in response to recent incidents involving passenger vessels operating on the Mokpo–Jeju route and the recent surge in domestic orders for coastal passenger ships at local small shipyards, with the aim of proactively addressing potential issues that may arise during future ship construction.
The meeting took place in the Mokpo Branch conference room and included presentations and discussions on topics related to construction quality, such as material inspections, welding procedures and welder qualifications, and equipment inspections carried out by classification societies and government authorities. In particular, an active Q&A session was held on car ferry construction and electric propulsion systems, and participants expressed overall satisfaction with the explanations and guidance provided by KR.
Representatives from several companies attended the meeting, including Onnuri Ship Design, Khan Plant, Seongbo, Bison Engineering, Jang Sung Tech, Miraero Ship Design, Ocean Ship Technology, Malcon, and Moonchang Shipbuilding.
KR plans to actively incorporate feedback gathered during the meeting into its future management of new ship construction projects and will continue to strengthen cooperation with small shipyards and design companies within the Mokpo Branch jurisdiction to support safe and efficient shipbuilding operations.
