KR announced that it has surpassed 90 million gross tons (GT) in classed tonnage, marking 90.03 million GT as of 19 December, 2025.
The milestone represents a significant step for KR, which began with just two vessels totaling 4,875 GT in 1962. Since exceeding 80 million GT in 2022, KR has expanded its classed fleet by an additional 10 million GT in three years, reflecting steady and sustained growth.
The remarkable achievement comes amid intensified competition among classification societies, tightening international regulations, and persistent geopolitical risks. Despite these challenges, KR strengthened its commercial, survey, and technical capabilities, attracting both newbuildings and existing ships from a growing base of international shipowners.
Notably, the milestone was reached despite the loss of approximately 3.77 million GT due to sanctions related to Russia and Iran, underscoring the effectiveness of KR’s proactive global market strategy.
LEE Hyungchul, the former Chairman & CEO of KR, said, “This milestone reflects the confidence that shipowners place in KR’s technical expertise and service quality. We will continue to strengthen that trust by delivering services from the customer’s perspective and remaining a classification society chosen for its technical excellence and service quality.
