KR has announced the official launch of “KR-POLAR ASSIST,” a specialized technical service designed to support shipowners in complying with the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), effective from 1 January 2026.
The Polar Code, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), was developed to address unique environmental risks, such as sea ice and extreme low temperatures. Under the Code, shipowners must conduct thorough operational assessments and maintain a Polar Water Operational Manual (PWOM) on board to ensure safety and environmental protection.
As interest in Arctic shipping routes grows, shipowners have faced practical challenges due to limited polar operational data. To address these industry needs, KR developed KR-POLAR ASSIST to provide a structured framework for regulatory compliance and operational safety.
KR-POLAR ASSIST offers a comprehensive technical review suite, integrating ship-specific Polar Code requirement analysis, hazard identification, and PWOM preparation guidelines.
Specifically, KR provides tailored reports based on the analysis of ships and areas of operation, enabling shipowners to clearly identify polar risks and mitigation measures for more reliable operational assessments.
Upon request, KR also hosts HAZID (Hazard Identification) workshops led by its technical experts to pinpoint operational risks and develop mitigation measures. The resulting outcome reports serve as critical supporting data for both operational assessments and PWOM development.
Furthermore, KR provides guidelines reflecting Polar Code mandates, allowing shipowners to develop their operational manuals with greater efficiency and systematic accuracy.
KIM Kyungbok, Executive Vice President of KR’s Statutory Division highlighted, "KR-POLAR ASSIST service is designed to provide practical support for our customers, enhancing vessel safety while easing the regulatory burden of polar operations. KR remains committed to expanding our convention-based technical services to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry."
Detailed information on the service and application procedures is now available on the official KR website.
