KR Hosts 6th K. LNG Owners Forum
26 Aug. 2025

Korean Register (KR) successfully hosted the 6th K. LNG Owners Forum on July 10 at La Valse Hotel in Busan, with the participation of key representatives from Korea’s major LNG shipping companies, shipyards, and engine manufacturers.

As the maritime industry accelerates its transition toward decarbonization, LNG-fueled vessels continue to attract attention as a practical and cost-effective alternative for meeting tightening environmental regulations. Since 2023, KR has organized the K. LNG Owners Forum biannually as a dedicated platform to address key issues related to LNG carriers and bunkering vessels.

This forum brought together more than 50 participants, including representatives from Hyundai LNG Shipping, SK Shipping, H-Line Shipping, POS SM, HMM Ocean Service, G-Marine Service, and Kmarin Ocean Service. Korea’s leading shipbuilders also attended, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean along with engine experts from HD Hyundai EMD and HD Hyundai Marine Solution.

Key presentations included:

  • OPEX Evaluation of HiMSEN LNG Dual-Fuel Engine
  • Case Study: LNG Dual-Fuel Vessel Operation
  • Review of KC-2C Cargo Containment System Design
  • Key issues on LNGC Cargo Containment Systems and Filling Limit Impact under the updated IGC Code
  • Key Updates from IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 110) & Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83)
  • LNG Shipping Industry’s Perspective on the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework
  • Operational challenges in LNGC Machinery and Cargo Handling Systems

YOON Boogeun, Executive Vice President of KR’s Survey Division, highlighted:
“With the IMO’s mid-term measures and discussions on carbon levies now underway, it is essential for the shipping industry to go beyond short-term compliance and pave the way for sustainable development. KR will continue to take a proactive role in supporting LNG operators with innovative and systematic technical solutions to meet these evolving challenges.”
