KR Grants AIP to HD HHI for Innovative CHS of Membrane Ammonia Tank
23 Jul. 2025

On June 24, Korean Register (KR) granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for the Cargo Handling System (CHS) of its 23K membrane-type ammonia bunkering vessel.

The design features a newly developed membrane-type ammonia cargo containment system optimized for ammonia storage and transport, incorporating a wall-mounted piping system that replaces conventional pump tower.

The new piping configuration simplifies installation by attaching directly to the hull, reducing structural complexity and vessel weight. If this system applied to actual vessels, it is expected to lower construction costs and enhance the competitiveness of eco-friendly ship solutions.

KR conducted comprehensive structural assessments taking into account sloshing and thermal loads, verifying the system’s structural integrity prior to issuing the AIP.

YEON Kyujin, Head of Plan Approver Center at KR, stated, “KR will continue to actively support emerging technologies through AIP and Joint Development Project (JDP) in collaboration with global maritime leaders.”
