KR and HD Hyundai Group are pioneering the standardization of next-generation maritime technologies through a series of strategic initiatives. Their collaborative efforts span environmental compliance and establishment of new standards for decarbonization technologies, setting new benchmarks for the industry's sustainable transformation.
KR Awards AIP to HD Hyundai Mipo for N2 Charging System in Dual-Fuel Engine Double Wall Pipes
On May 15, 2025, Korean Register (KR) awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Mipo for the "N2 Charging system of double wall pipe annular space for low pressure dual fuel engine."
The innovative system replaces conventional extraction fan systems with an advanced nitrogen charging approach for the annular space of double wall pipes in low-pressure dual-fuel engines.

While confirmation from engine manufacturers and several additional considerations are required for implementing this design concept, the technology is expected to deliver significant cost reductions in both shipbuilding and operations once applied to actual vessels.
YEON Kyujin, Senior Vice President of KR's Plan Approval Center, stated, "KR will continue to support decarbonization technologies that advance the maritime industry's sustainability goals."
KR Awards AIP to HD Hyundai Mipo for N2 Charging System in Dual-Fuel Engine Double Wall Pipes
On May 22, Korean Register (KR) signed a Joint Development Project (JDP) agreement with HD Hyundai Samho to establish standards for the design and installation of permanent magnet (PM) shaft generators.
As tightening environmental regulations, the adoption of shaft generators, particularly in LNG carriers, is increasing, with PM types drawing interest for their high efficiency and eco-friendliness.
HD Hyundai Samho has extensive experience in applying shaft generators and plans to expand their use across future newbuilds.
Through this JDP, KR and HD Hyundai Samho will collaborate to share technical expertise and develop standards guidelines that reflect the mechanical impact of PM shaft generators on propulsion shafting system.
KR and HD Hyundai HHI Strengthen Cooperation on NOx Code Compliance
On May 15, Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) held a kickoff ceremony in Ulsan to launch a joint task force in response to stricter international air pollution regulations.
This initiative aims to proactively respond to the amended NOx Technical Code (NTC), which was adopted at the 83rd session of Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83). The task force seeks to clarify approval procedures ahead of the amendment’s entry into force.
This collaboration is expected to contribute to the standardization of NOx approval processes between KR and HD HHI, while also strengthening technical competencies and survey quality through in-depth analysis of the NTC and its implementation.
