CII
CIICarbon Intensity Indicator
  • Introduction
    • By end of 2022, a ship of 5,000 gross tonnages and above is required to amend the existing SEEMP and make GHG reduction efforts in accordance with the approved SEEMP to comply with the CII regulation. From 2024, a ship has to calculate the attained CII based on the IMO DCS data and will be rated from A to E depending on the CII achievement.
    • Guidelines on calculations, reference line, reduction factors and rating boundaries are under development and will be finalized at MEPC 76 along with EEXI guidelines.
    • It will be important to achieve a high rating for ships, as ships with high rating will be a competitive but low rating ships may be withdrawn from the chartering market. In order to comply with the CII, a ship has to consider both a technical approach in terms of efficiency and input cost and an operational approach in terms of whether it is controllable or uncontrollable when establishing the countermeasures.
    • The following flowchart shows the steps ship owners have to take in preparation of CII compliance.
  • CII Raing Service
    • KR provide the CII rating service on KR-GEARs.
      • Calculation of CII (Carbon Intensity Indicators)
      • Calculation of CII rating based on Required/Attained CII
      • Simulation of CO2 reduction for targeted higher CII rating (Only for verified data From KR)
      • Estimation of CII rating by 2026 based on verified data
    * The back-data for calculating CII such as reduction factor, reference line, and rating boundaries are under discussion on IMO and it will be determined in MEPC 76 meeting(June, this year). At this stage, the calculated CII and CII rating can be used for reference only.
